5 Things I Learned From Being Married

Lately, I've had quite a handful of friends asking me how my life has been being married. Well, I would usually reply them plainly "it's the same!". I am but a 2 months old bride who hasn't gone on her honeymoon trip, so life has been good indeed. One thing for sure though, things aren't always going to be smooth sailing. We're prepared to make things work when hiccups come our way and here's a list of things I've learned so far:

1. Go through Shit together.
I mean figuratively and literally. As the traditional wedding vow goes "to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health". Besides sticking through good or tough times together, keeping track of each other's health matters too. You can tell someone else's health through his/her poop. Here's an interesting infographic about poop and health to explain how. So for literally going through shit together, you can have a good insight of your partner's health and keep track of each other's diet - before health deteriorates and figuratively go through shit together.

2. Go on dates.
Yes, this may sound cliche, but we see each other every day that we tend to easily neglect the need of going out. Yes, we can also spend quality time at home cooking, watching the tv or doing the chores. But it's always nice to rekindle the joy of going on dates and reliving the courtship days with the person I chose to spend the rest of my life with. Walk the streets hand in hand, marvel at new buildings around the area, laugh at silly things we see along the streets, share new insights, talk about the new social trends, go shopping for new clothes together.. Which leads me to my next point.

3. Dress to Impress.
Being married, I tend to put much lesser makeup on and he sees my naked face most of the time. Even though he probably loves me the way I am, I find it fun to dress up and doll up once in awhile. Why hide what you've got, especially from the man you love, right? Same goes for him. I find myself admiring him like a silly teenage girl when he dresses up. It reminds me of how I was so attracted to him back then, albeit slightly mature. Looking good boosts confidence too, which we all know is the sexiest thing of all.

4. Doubling up as a secretary/PA.
"Baby, where is my watch?""Darling, do you remember if I took my shades from the car?" I feel that I have become so much more observant than I used to be after being married. It's as if I had to have a total 180degrees field of vision to keep track of things. Don't get me wrong, Shaun isn't an absent minded person. Having a plus one in your life means that somebody else's issues are also yours now.

5. Choose your battles.
Someone gave me a piece of advice on my hen's party. "Quit dwelling on the small issues. Always look at the big picture." A mere two months into the marriage, and I can already see why this is hell of a good advice. I'm not going to go into the intricate details of that major fight that we had, but it was something along the lines of him telling me to do something (legit) in a not-so-nice tone and I totally didn't like it. I was really put off with his tone and the following things that he did, and was determined to not "give-in". It escalated to him almost spending the entire night on the couch. Well, if I had let the devil in my head take over, I would never have budged. Taking a step back to 'look at the big picture', I realised that I had probably amplified my own situation too much. In retrospect, I've found out a good way to solve such "battles". When in a fight:
Step 1: Relax and take deep breaths.
Step 2: Think back hard on what exactly happened. From BOTH POVs.
Step 3: Analyse your POV and your partner's POV.
Step 4: Evaluate.
Step 5:
Apply advice. (See line 1 of point 5)
If you're not in the wrong, ask yourself - "Is this battle worth conceding, for the happiness of you both?"Apologise first, explain later.
If you're in the wrong, ask yourself - "Is this battle worth fighting for? (Keeping in mind you're fighting with your life partner, not God, who'll always forgive you)"

Being married is indeed a truly happy thing. Enjoy the warmth and love from an additional family. Wake up happy to the arms of the one you love the most. Laugh for all you want, as you aren't afraid of being judged. Do all the things you want with your partner before kids come into your life.

wanted to blog about my visit to The Coastal Settlements, but i think that can wait haha. more excited to post my frankfurt pics!

first time to this place, finally. a pity that i wasnt scheduled to go to New York from Frankfurt! nonetheless, Frankfurt's a boring place i heard. and it really lived up to its name haha. it didnt help that i was there over the weekends. it was like a ghost town. the roads on the sunday morning were empty. we had lunch at quite a traditional pizza place and walked arnd town. shall let the pics do more of the talking:

and then skillfully flip it on the plate right in front of our eyes!

al fresco dining w the girls! wished i could go NY w you Wiyah!!

not sure if the girl was just working there or she was the lady-boss. but her bf was so sweet to just stay arnd and accompany her while she worked!

will never go wrong with banana nutella :)

such easy yet nice presentation of the yum on a big plate!

secret ambition to open such cafes in spore!! :)

a hiatus way too long

omg it's really been so long since i visited this channel. chanced upon some nice instagram profiles and got inspired to follow nice blogs again.
the past year zoomed past and was a bleahh. been literally zooming here and there around the world aimlessly that now i feel so ashamed of myself. it's getting comfortable now, but i sincerely know that i shouldnt let myself be contented with what i have. the thrill of traveling is also slowly wearing off, but the feeling of being overseas and away from reality does bring me back. haha ironic but true. my batchmates and i all know that we cannot settle for this comfort zone. all the best to me in search for my next direction! :)
As we grow older, we get more caught up in life and work that we start losing friends. circle of friends get smaller. i also choose to believe that it might be due to the state of mind? if we're constantly keeping ourselves occupied and thinking of something, i guess we won't feel that bad? ive seen so many lone travelers, heading to different destinations for different agendas. deep down inside, i've always had a burning question. what keeps them going? how bout old folks who've lost their partners due to old age? their courage to face the world alone is really commendable.
alright. enough of such ramblings. some pictures to end this post on a lighter note!
happy one year baby! :)
been wanting a balenciaga bag, and here it is finally!! :) love the colour to bits.
>
we've taken ice cream binging to a higher level!! fr ice cream hangouts in ice cream chefs to gelato in an atas cafe in MILANO! :)
and an awesome view from a lake behind the Castle Sforzesco in milan. was so surreal cuz we chanced upon this place behind the castle. walked through an amusement park and found this lake and park. almost like walking out of a very random dream :)

chanced upon this :)

“It’s more than just affection for someone; it’s a deep underlying connection. The comfort of knowing you can tell them everything, and not have worry about being judged. The first person you tell when something exciting happens, or when something scary happens. The person you turn to when you need to vent. The person you can laugh at because they will just laugh back at you. The person you need to tell things to so your brain doesn’t explode. The person who can make you feel better when you’re having a tough day, the one you turn to for advice.. The person you can have full conversations with by merely exchanging glances.”

i recently read a line from a book that striked me quite hard. "could any man resist the temptation of evil if he knew his acts could not be witnessed?"

weird but i think my answer would be a definite no! :S

selfcenteredness

i often get irritated at work when people request for this and that and that and this. at that very moment i'd get really worked up and frustrated cuz i just cant get the tasks i need to complete smoothly.

notice the word 'I' was used quite a few times in the above paragraph. it is precisely that i expect ppl to understand my situation and emphatise with me that the frustration builds up. but when i stop and put myself in their shoes, i then realised that maybe each of them only made that one (small) request each, and thus get ashamed of myself for thinking that way.

why do humans have this selfcentred streak in them? for greed? for hunger? for survival??

lao zi once said: " Manifest plainness, Embrace simplicity, Reduce selfishness, Have few desires.

i guess that should be the way to go. as we lower our expectations and embrace simplicity, the concept of ME would somehow shrink and get smaller. and hopefully we'll learn to emphatise with ppl around us :)

"People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway. Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway." - Mother Teresa

stop and stare

http://zaidlearn.blogspot.com/2009/09/finnish-education-system-rocks-why.html

1. PUNCTUALITY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
2. BEING EFFICIENT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
3. INVESTING SIGNIFICANTLY IN EDUCATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
4. TEACHER EDUCATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

not like im some education minister-wannabe, but it's quite an inspiring and insightful read.

sporeans are forever in this rat race, a so-called pressure cooker education system. i think we just cant help it! there're so many reasons that lead to this, but largely cuz of our collectivistic culture and upbringing? like we care alot about how we perform in a group, how a group (or school) perform, how our performance is as compared to where we stand in group..., which inevitably contributes to our competitive nature?

the list would be endless if we try to analyse the situation. but i guess this would always be a never ending battle. everyone striving to work harder and the stress would always be there. it'd be good to stop and learn how others are doing, like looking at the world from the other end of the telescope.

chill everyone! stress levels' rising cuz of exams. dont forget to spread the love (L) ! (:

cheers to 21st

spent my 20th nov with some friends over dinner. had B&J ice cream cake. yayy! haha though the restaurant screwed it up and it was all melted when they served it. then up to altitude 737 at night. quite memorable cuz it's the highest club in montreal and overlooks a good night view of montreal. (:

thanks everybuddy for all the well wishes! (: i miss you guys deepdeep.

it's 2weeks of school left! i dont know why im so excited bout it. cant wait for school and exams to be over yet dont want my stay in montreal to end so early. i guess it's the separation anxiety all exchange students would face. like it's starting to get comfortable and im used to life here and made new good friends and we'd have to part soon. on the other hand, CANT WAIT FOR saltlake, LA, LV AND SF! and of course back home where all my friends and family are and the fooddddd (:

oh and it finally dawned on me that im an adult alr!

i wish i could fly, but i wanna know that there'll always be someone there (:
